An imbalance of certain bacteria in the intestines can lead to increased intestinal inflammation, which can result in so-called "silent inflammation". The bacteria Akkermansia muciniphilaa Faecalibacterium prausnitzii counteract this development. Akkermansia muciniphila is responsible for the production of highly viscous mucus and thus strengthens the intestinal barrier so that foreign microbes and harmful substances cannot penetrate through the intestinal mucosa into the bloodstream. The bacteria Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, on the other hand, produce special fatty acids containing butyric acid (butyrate). These fatty acids demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties, and mainly supply the intestinal mucosa with energy, which strengthens the so-called "tight junctions". These represent the connection (membrane proteins) between the cells of the intestinal mucosa and ensure the selection of important nutrients and their separation from harmful substances. Inflammation in the intestines often occurs in overweight people, because special fat cells in the abdominal area produce pro-inflammatory cytokines that can harm the entire organism.
